This Stretch Of Highway In CT Is Busiest Corridor In US: Survey

The stretch of roadway topped the list for busiest corridors in the US for 2024, according to transportation analytics company INRIX.

STAMFORD, CT — A new survey report recently released by transportation analytics company INRIX confirmed what most Connecticut drivers already know to be true: the stretch of I-95 Southbound through the Stamford area is the busiest corridor in the United States.

The stretch between Westport and Indian Field Road resulted in large traffic delays for drivers during the 8 a.m. commute hour in 2024, INRIX says.

"Taking that road every weekday during the peak hour would result in a driver losing about 150 hours to traffic congestion in 2024 alone," INRIX said.

INRIX defines "hours lost" as the total number of hours lost in congestion during peak commute periods compared to off-peak conditions.

Additionally, the Stamford urban area was ranked 17th on the list of most congested areas in the country for 2024. The number of hours lost in the area jumped from 40 in 2023 to 47 in 2024, the survey notes. It's the second biggest delay change percentage (18 percent) out of 25 cities on the list.

An urban area is the geographic scope of a city as defined by its road network density, more akin to a metropolitan area, INRIX says.

Coming in second on the list for busiest corridors in the country is I-93 Southbound in Boston, with the hotspot ranging from the Charles River to Pilgrim's Highway.

A driver taking that road at 3 p.m. every weekday would spend about 109 extra hours on the road due to traffic, INRIX says.
