Treating Stamford's Allergies All-Naturally

If you've got some bad allergies and nothing you've tried seems to work, you might want to take a look at some of your "alternative" options.

Dr. Melissa Robinson is a homeopathic doctor who operates out of locations in Stamford and Ridgefield and she provides all-natural options for combating the seasonal sneezes.

"We diagnose symptoms the same way, but we don't treat the same as allopathic doctors," Robinson said. Allopathic is a term sometimes used by doctors who provide alternative methods to describe traditional medicine. "If you have an upper respiratory infection, instead of prescribing medicine, in homeopathy we's treat it with an herb or other natural remedy."

Robinson, a Naturopathic physician, graduated medical school in 2003. She likened the first two years as being almost identical to traditional doctors, but said the later part of her learning was a "return to the roots" of medicine that had been used forever by doctors until the birth of the pharmaceutical movement.

She also said in the 10 years since her graduation, the field has exploded with people looking for options when traditional pharmaceutical medicine fails them.

"There's been huge growth now that patients are asking more questions, there's more information to be found online, people don't want to be taking more daily medicine or they're taking it and it's not working," Robinson said.

Some of Robinson's suggestions to cure what ails you are taking a spoonful of local, organic honey prior to the year's allergy season as a preventative measure, as this will often allow your body to adjust to the area allergens. A Netty Pot and saline solution also help clean out the nasal passages.

She said she also deals in bioflavonoids, essentially vitamin extract from plants, and probiotics, which are pills containing 15 to 30 billion bacterial organisms you take right before bedtime to boost your immune system. Additionally, nettles, horseradish and curcumin, which act as anti-inflammatories and antihistamines.
