Utility Scammers Target Stamford Residents

Callers posing as utility workers are threatening residents and businesses to pay their bills.

Stamford businesses and residents have fallen victim to a phone scam in which callers are posing as electric company employees.

Stamford Police said Thursday, “The department’s Financial Crimes Unit has received multiple calls from residents reporting that they have been contacted and told that their power will be turned off if they do not pay their utility bill.”

The potential scam victims are instructed to pay the bill in the form of Green Dot cards or other non-traditional methods, according to police.

“No utility company will call you and ask you to pay a bill using Green Dot cards. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from a utility company and you are skeptical of their credentials, find a copy of your bill and call the number listed there to ensure you are speaking to a true employee,” police advised.

Eversource is the local power company supplier and they are aware of the scam also, police said.
