Whole Foods Sign Affixed To Building As Stamford Waits For Opening

The Stamford store will represent Connecticut's 12th location.

STAMFORD, CT — A "Whole Foods" sign has been affixed to the building at 110 High Ridge Road, a possible tell that the long-awaited grocery store could be opening soon.

But how soon remains a mystery. Permits for the business were issued by the city in early June, according to Lauren Meyer, a spokesperson for Mayor Caroline Simmons.

"At this point, it is up to the subcontractors to request inspections and for city staff to inspect the site," Meyer told Patch this week.

Whole Foods has not shared details on an opening date for the store despite repeated requests for more information.

"We look forward to serving the Stamford community with high-quality natural and organic products and an unparalleled grocery shopping experience," the company said in an email to Patch Thursday.

News of a new store first came in April 2022 when Whole Foods said a Stamford store was in "development." A few months later, the location was revealed as 110 High Ridge Road, the former site of Lord & Taylor. Whole Foods will share the building with Saks Off 5th, which opened in October 2022.

Whole Foods Market was founded in Austin, Texas in 1980, and eventually became the first certified organic national grocer.

Over the years, the company has grown in popularity as a destination for organic, natural foods with expansive seafood, meat, bakery and prepared food departments. There are now more than 500 retail and non-retail locations in the U.S., Canada and the UK.

The Stamford store will represent Connecticut's 12th location. There are currently stores in Avon, Danbury, Darien, Fairfield, Glastonbury, Greenwich, Milford, South Windsor, Westport and West Hartford (two stores).
