Application Filed to Change Regulations on Chickens

If approved, the regulations would allow more families to raise more chickens.

An application to change Stonington’s zoning regulations on raising chickens has been filed by Peg Moran of Chicken Lovers Urge Change, or CLUC*K.

The application asks the town to change is regulations so that more people in town can raise chickens. Right now residents can raise two chickens if they have lots of three acres or more, but if the application is approved, residents will be able to raise six hens or two hens per family member.

According to The Day newspaper the application, “would require anyone who has hens to keep them in a fenced enclosure in a rear or side yard with 16 square feet of space per hen. A coop with 4 square feet of space per hen is also required.”   A public hearing on the issue will be scheduled.
