Can the Local Economy Afford Good Clean Fun?

Are the days of fun parks long gone?

People are chiming in about what they’d like to see happen to the Maple Breeze Park property in Pawcatuck that’s heading to foreclosure auction in June. Patch posted this article about the long-closed fun park that is up for sale. For only a $185,000 deposit, one lucky buyer will get the coveted spot held dear by so many with fond summer memories of mini golf, go-karts, hanging out and summer pastimes galore.

Tina Campbell posted on the Stonington-Mystic Patch Facebook page that, “mini golf was awesome provided jobs for students and made money and taxes for the town” and Joseph Brown said, “Man wouldn't a Target there be great!”

After First Selectman Ed Haberek posted the article on his Facebook page, saying that it's a good opportunity for a developer, people replied that a return of the previous fun park would be the ideal use of the space.

“It would be nice to see it as a ice cream/bumper boats/mini golf/water slide/kid friendly place again, but that's seems to be a time gone by,” wrote James Davis in response to the selectman’s post.

For a town/area that depends heavily on the tourist season, it is surprisingly lacking in the mini golf, go cart, bumper boats and water slide departments, especially when compared to other kid friendly vacation spots in Cape Cod or the NH and Maine coasts. James Davis says that for this area, their time has passed, “that's seems to be a time gone by. Probably will be a Burger King.”

What do you think, can the local economy support a summer past time should we hold out for something more lucrative?
