Group Seeks Help to Remove Deteriorating, Dangerous Barge

A rotting coal barge of mysterious ownership is slated for removal as soon as a group, Clean Up Sound and Harbors, raises about $10,000 for the permits and removal process. 

According to a report in The Day, the barge, which can be seen behind Twisters on Route 27, has been there for decades and perhaps it’s the recent storms, but it appears to be deteriorating a quicker rate lately. 

Timbers and rusty spikes were found in other parts of the river during a recent clean up and pose a threat to boaters and walkers. CUSH created “Boot the Barge” campaign to eliminate the barge, which still poses a threat to people enjoying the river. 

While they research who owns the barge and why it was constructed, CUSH has partnered with several commercial and municipal organizations and they have attained the needed permits from Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers but they are seeking public support in raising $10,000.
