Here Are The Details On Special Town Meeting In Stonington

Town Meeting will weigh in on tax abatement for emergency responders, regulation of open burning, a property purchase, and other issues.

STONINGTON, CT — The Special Town Meeting of the electors and citizens qualified to vote in Town Meetings of the Town of Stonington, Connecticut, will be held at Stonington High School, 176 South Broad St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379 on Monday, June 16, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. Check-in will begin at 6:30 p.m. Please bring your identification.

FIRST: A resolution for an Ordinance of the Town of Stonington, Connecticut, to implement a tax abatement program for volunteer firefighters and volunteer EMS personnel in the Town of Stonington as a way to recognize their service, improve volunteer retention, and encourage increased participation in the Town's volunteer emergency services pursuant to Connecticut General Statutes §12-81w. Said ordinance would provide a tax abatement for volunteer firefighters and volunteer EMS personnel who live in the Town and who volunteer for fire departments and ambulance services who regularly respond within the Town. The abatement amounts are based upon eligibility related to a scale of volunteer activities. A copy of the proposed Ordinance is on file in the Town Clerk’s office during normal business hours and found below.

SECOND: A resolution to adopt an Ordinance of the Town of Stonington, Connecticut, revising the Stonington Harbor Management Plan and separating the Plan from this ordinance. A copy of the complete text of the proposed Harbor Management Plan revisions is on file in the Town Clerk’s office during normal business hours and found below.

THIRD: A resolution for an Ordinance of the Town of Stonington, Connecticut, to regulate open burning and recreational fires within the Town of Stonington to protect public health, safety and welfare and to ensure compliance with State of Connecticut’s open burning regulations. Furthermore, to provide specifics as to the open burning policy and to create enforcement procedures. A copy of the proposed Ordinance is on file in the Town Clerk’s office during normal business hours and below.

FOURTH: A resolution to terminate the previous committee and create a Stonington K–12 School Building Committee to assess, plan, and oversee improvements to the Town's public school facilities, with an immediate focus on the long-term needs of the middle school population. A copy of the complete text of the proposed Resolution is on file in the Town Clerk’s office during normal business hours and below.

FIFTH: A resolution to authorize the purchase of certain real property located at 160-162 South Broad Street, Pawcatuck, Connecticut from the VFW Harley Chase Post 1265, Inc. for Two Hundred and Eighty-Five Thousand Dollars ($285,000) on additional terms acceptable to the Board of Selectmen and Town Attorney; and to further authorize the First Selectman to sign any and all documents necessary and incidental to effectuate said purchase. A copy of the complete text of the proposed purchase and sale agreement is on file in the Town Clerk’s office during normal business hours and found below.

All ordinances and amendments thereto shall become effective following approval by Town Meeting and fifteen (15) days after publication in a newspaper having a substantial circulation within the Town of Stonington.
