Meetings, a Book Talk and More Music

Things to know today, August 8.

  1. Well it was fun. It's supposed to be rainy with thunderstorms through Saturday. The National Weather Service says for today, showers are likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9am, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 9am. Same goes for tonight and otherwise, you can expect a high temperature around 76 and a low around 71. 
  2. Meetings: The Board of Police Commissioners have a special meeting at 4 p.m. and then their regular meeting at 5 p.m. The Old Mystic Fire District Board meets at 7:30 p.m. and the Board of Education meeting is canceled.
  3. There's a book talk with Carlos Eire, one of 14,000 children airlifted from Cuba without parents between 1960-62 by Operation Pedro Pan. He'll be speaking at La Grua Center at 6 p.m. on Friday; the event is free.
  4. Today through Saturday from 9 am-5 pm the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center is hosting a Cultural Survival Bazaar. It’s a festival of indigenous arts and cultures from around the world. Watch craft-making demonstrations and purchase ethnic clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, Hmong embroidery, crafts, rugs, and accessories. Enjoy Hawaiian and Native American live performances, and ethnic cuisine.
  5. Kevin and Heather will be performing tonight at the Steak Loft beginning at 7 p.m.
