Mystic Aquarium Announces Gender of Newest Penguin Chicks

The Mystic Aquarium announced that both of their four-month-old African Penguin chicks are female!  

The chicks, which are named Purple Red and Purple Gray (colors stand in for numbers), hatched on Feb. 1 and Feb. 10 respectively. The aquarium used DNA testing because male and female African penguins cannot be told apart, according to the aquarium’s press release.  

Mystic Aquarium visitors had the opportunity to guess the genders before the reveal Thursday. Two visitors were gifted with a one-of-a-kind painting done by the proud penguin parents and everyone else got pink cupcakes.
