HARTFORD, CT — Sam Montalto has scored more goals than anyone in the history of Stonington High School boys soccer, and his final two goals as a member of the Bears proved to be crucial to a second consecutive state championship.

The Providence College-bound senior scored the first goal of Saturday's Class M title clash with Ellington at Dillon Stadium, then added an insurance tally with just over 2:30 remaining to lift the Bears to a 3-1 victory.

Stonington led 2-0 at halftime following goals by Montalto and William DeCastro, but the Knights cut the deficit in half early in the second half on a score by Kevin Desrocher. The game remained nip and tuck until Montalto's second goal of the day clinched the championship.
