Tainted Heroin Leads to Overdoses in Area: Police

Three people were arrested on heroin charges in Groton. The heroin tested positive for fentanyl, the cause of recent overdoses in SE CT.

The recent overdoses in the New London County area have been traced to the presumptive presence of fentanyl. According to the Town of Groton Police Department, three people were placed under arrest in Groton after an investigation into the sale of tainted heroin within southeastern Connecticut.

The Regional Community Enhancement Task Force, formed to combat the heroin epidemic in the area and to improve the quality of life for citizens, made the following arrests:

  • Lorenzo A. Malcom, 27, of 27 Catherine St., New London
  • Gilberto X. Alvarez, 29, no permanent address
  • Rachel A. Mead, 40, no permanent address

The three people were all charged with the following:

  • Possession of Heroin
  • Possession of Heroin with Intent to sell
  • Possession of Heroin with Intent to sell over 1 ounce
  • Possession of Crack Cocaine
  • Possession of Cocaine
  • Possession of Cocaine with Intent to sell
  • Possession of Marijuana over 4 oz.
  • Possession of Marijuana with Intent to sell

Police seized the following as a result of the investigation:

  • 10.6 ounces (approx. 302 grams) of heroin packaged for sale
  • More than 6.5 grams of crack cocaine
  • More than 20 grams of powder cocaine
  • More than 12.3 ounces (approx. 345 grams) of marijuana
  • More than $2,000 cash
  • A Chevrolet Sedan
  • 10 cellular phones

“Later it was found that all heroin seized during this investigation tested positive for the presumptive presence of fentanyl; which has been reported to be the cause of recent overdoses in the region,” Groton Police said in the police report.
