The officers provided first aid until an ambulance arrived and took Class to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.
Class' mom, Erica Ortiz, told News 12 Connecticut reporter Marissa Alter that her son was "in the wrong place at the wrong time" and had an 8-month-old daughter, Alter tweeted.
Ortiz has started a GoFundMe to pay for Class' burial and funeral expenses, which as of Thursday afternoon has raised nearly $5,400.
Ansonia police told the CT Post that they are still investigating the shooting, though they said they have "several strong leads."
Police wrote in a Facebook post that they learned the shooting "happened during an attempted drug purchase where the suspect fired into the Honda striking the victim."
"The Honda then fled the scene before stopping on Main Street and calling 911," police wrote.
