A Stratford man was charged with first-degree criminal trespass early Monday after he was found on Fairfield University property -- he had previously been warned not to set foot on the campus, police said.

Michael McCarthy, 22, of Johnson Avenue, reportedly told police that he knew he wasn't allowed on campus, but he "took a chance" to pick up a friend, Fairfield Police spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier said.

McCarthy had been arrested in 2009 for possession of marijuana at Fairfield University and had signed a trespass form with the university, according to the report. He had also been warned not to return by police.

McCarthy was released on a promise to appear in court on April 16.
