Stratford Mayor Urges Denial Of Aquarion Water Company Sale

Stratford Mayor Laura Hoydick is urging residents to contact PURA regarding the proposed sale of Aquarion to the Regional Water Authority.

STRATFORD, CT — Stratford Mayor Laura Hoydick is calling on the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority to reject the proposed sale of Aquarion Water Company to the South-Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority.

PURA is scheduled to vote on the proposed acquisition on Wednesday, Nov. 19, a decision that Hoydick said “could significantly and negatively impact Stratford’s water rates, water service, and local tax revenue for years to come.”

Hoydick is urging Stratford residents to “contact PURA immediately and ask them to DENY this acquisition.”

“Dozens of Connecticut mayors and first selectmen, including myself, have already voiced strong opposition because this proposal is not in the public interest and would harm Stratford residents,” Hoydick wrote in a post on Facebook.

Hoydick said the risks include “projected 65% rate increases, loss of regulatory oversight, reduced Town tax revenue, billions in customer-funded debt, uncertainty around future infrastructure investment, and loss of local control.”
