The River Dog Calls It Quits For Good
Two powerful storms in two years spell end for local favorite. 'We just couldn't justify taking the chance again,' say the owners. 'The decision didn't come easy, but we know it's the right one.'
Mother Nature has spelled the end for one of Stratford's favorite feel-good food offerings.
After being hit hard by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and then again by Superstorm Sandy last fall, the River Dog made it official on its Facebook page Tuesday:
Unfortunately, the River Dog is no more. We just couldn't justify taking the chance again. The decision didn't come easy, but we know it's the right one.

The owners rebounded after Irene and reopened last June. But four months later Superstorm Sandy slammed the coastline and did not spare the food stand at the Birdseye Boat Ramp.
We will miss everyone and never forget how supportive you have all been, the Facebook post continued. We were proud to have been a part of each of your lives for the last three years, and will certainly let you know if and when we relocate.

In an open letter to the community after Sandy, owner Deb Torreso wrote:
Human nature is a funny thing ... we often feel the need to renegotiate our decisions, especially the ones tainted with emotionality. Once our pain has eased and our spirits lifted, we may find our strength return to meet that power which has beat us down -- with ferocity the likes of which are - not to be underestimated.
The Facebook post concluded:
Special thanks to Donna Rae, Joe and Maureen, our friends at the Coast Guard, the many departments of the Town of Strat[f]ord, and Water Front Commission, for their belief and support. It has been a wonderful experience because of all of you and our incredible customers!!
Have a happy and safe summer-
Peace and Love to you all!!
Greg, Janet and Deb
