Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?

As coach of the Stratford High School cross country team, I have come to know Amos over the last four years.

During this period of time, I have watched him grow from an inexperienced runner to now a State of Connecticut All State contender. If you are familiar with the rigorous demands of cross country running then you understand what is required to be successful.

If you are not familiar with the sport, it takes a large commitment to motivate oneself to get better each and every day. The excruciating exertion is immense. The workout routines must be progressive with a sense of achievement at the end of the training day.

Further, academically, the student athlete must budget their time in order to be successful both in the classroom and in the sport of cross country.

If one is able to do both, the result of that person is that person develops confidence and multiple levels of accomplishments.

The fact is, it all starts with a goal in mind. A mindset and the ability to see the end result of hard work.

Amos came to us with very little running experience, also he was new to the high school environment. We knew what must have been going through his head, confusion, isolation, etc.

His very first day of Stratford High School cross country training was in the summer of 2019, which was without attending a single class, due to the school not open yet. This was his first experience of high school life. It was not easy for him, and as I recall, he wanted to go home. But he stayed, came back the next day, the next day, and now four years later has developed into a top-notch student and champion level athlete.

He is a very quiet person by nature. His grades speak loudly about the student he is. His popularity around the State of Connecticut in cross country career shows he has the respect of his running “adversaries.” There isn’t a meet that goes by where he is not approached by his competition. The friendships he has developed speak for themselves.

Above all, Amos has matured as a person during these most important years and knows how much it takes to be an intelligent person along with the work ethic it takes to conquer the goal set forth before him.

Therefore, it is without hesitation, or debate, that I recommend Amos to the fortunate college or university he is accepted at, or he chooses to attend.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?

That we need more like him. If the world was like Amos, what a great place it would be.

Keep up the great work, Amos!
