Goodspeed Opera House Hits 50

The playhouse in East Haddam is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and the Hartford Courant's critic takes a look back at its history.

The Goodspeed Opera House has 50 years' worth of plays under its belt this year and Hartford Courant critic Frank Rizzo sat down this week with the playhouse's director, Michael Price,Β this week to talk about some of that history.Β

The Goodspeed, located in an iconic Victorian-era mansion that looms over the Connecticut River near the Haddam-East Haddam Swing Bridge, has seen hundreds of actors come and go over the years, some of them among some of the most famous faces of their time, who performed in the countless musicals, dramas and comedies the Goodspeed produced.Β

"We kept re-branding ourselves as we went along," Price told Rizzo. "You can't live on what you did in the past."
