Killingworth Selectmen Discuss Town Cemetery Maintenance, Upkeep

The town has asked the Historical Society to come up with a detailed list of what needs to be done at each cemetery, from upkeep to stone restoration.

Several years ago, the Historical Society came to the Town of Killingworth and arranged to do an annual review of the town's cemeteries. They have done so throughout the last few years, with the exception of one year, and the time is now approaching this year for the town to look towards cemetery upkeep.

According to a representative from the Society, some easy clearing is necessary this year, including the clearing of some brush and small trees. Though the work has not been priced out, the town does have funds budgeted for such work. Some upkeep, such as mowing, is also needed.

"A town crew can do the mowing and clearing," First Selectman Catherine Iino said at Monday night's Selectmen's meeting. "We would ask the Historical Society to come up with a list of what exactly needs to be down and correspond with town crew, and we will support that."

Selectman Fred Dudek stated that a normal two man crew could complete the work in less than a day.

"In the wake of damage to Union Cemetery, we have also provided the Society with a list of certified stone restorers," Iino continued.

The Board and the Historical Society representative agreed that the Society would do more legwork on the best way to approach restoration of stones. The idea was also brought up that some clean-up or restoration could potentially be part of an Eagle Project.
