East Lyme K-9s Take a Bite Out of Crime

Two of the newest additions to East Lyme Police Department ought to give drug dealers and fleeing suspects a reason to pause.

Knox, a one-and-a-half-year-old yellow lab, has been on the beat since November as the department's narcotics dog. Jimo, a 2-year-old German shepherd has been on patrol since June as the tracking dog. 

Jimo has been called out about a dozen times so far, his handler Patrol Officer Michael Jezierski said. Knox's handler Patrol Officer Lindsay Cutillo says she's probably used him about 20 times to sniff out narcotics. 

Both dogs are highly-trained and they didn't come cheap. Jimo was imported from Europe and cost about $6,000. Knox cost $4,000 but was donated to the Police Department.

This Saturday, August 25, the East Lyme Police Department will be holding a Whiffleball Tournament to benefit the K-9 Program at Bridebrook Park in East Lyme. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the games begin at 11 a.m. The cost is $20 per person which includes a t-shirt and lunch.

The event is organized into teams of three to five people and played round robin style. This will be a home run derby with no base running.
