Niantic Man Charged With Burglary in Old Lyme

A Niantic man serving a two-year sentence for a burglary in Waterford was arrested on September 13 and charged with a second burglary, this time in Old Lyme.

John Hindman, 27, of 6 Champlin Hill Court in East Lyme, is charged with burglary in the third degree and larceny in the third degree. He was brought to New London's GA 10 Court from Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Montville and served with arrest warrants relating to a burglary that took place at 17 Library Lane in Old Lyme on December 27, 2011. Bond was set at $50,000.

According to reports in the New London Day based on the arrest affidavit, Hindman's father worked as a gardener for the homeowners in Old Lyme. The property owners don't live in the home year round and were not in residence at the time of the burglary. When they returned home, they discovered several power tools and sporting goods equipment had been stolen from the garage.

The arrest affidavit states that when confronted by State Trooper Gary W. Inglis about the crime, Hindman said he knew where the homeowners kept the key to the garage and he stole the items, valued at more than $6,000, to support his heroin habit, the Day reports.

Court records show Hindman has a number of previous convictions starting with breach of peace in 2004, evading in 2008, driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol in 2010, and most recently for larceny in 2012 for a burglary that took place in Waterford in March of this year. Hindman was arrested for that crime on April 2 and sentenced on May 2, 2012.
