The Daily Five: Big News in the Athletics Field!
Five things to know for Thursday, August 2, 2012

1. Today will be hot and humid, with a high temperature of 84 degrees and an overnight low of 70 degrees. Weather.com is predicting a chance of isolated thunderstorms late in the afternoon, a 30 percent chance of rain during the day, and a 10 percent chance of rain overnight.
2. East Lyme High School will hold an official groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. today for the new athletic fields. The new fields should increase the amount of usage from 110 events and practices a year to 400 for East Lyme High School alone. New lighting and an all-weather track and field will also extend the playing year for the school and for the many leagues that will be able to take advantage of the new facilities.

3. East Lyme Aquifer Protection Agency is planning to adopt new aquifer protection policies. The agency will hold a public hearing on the topic tonight at 7:30 p.m. The new regulations are the size of a small book, so I'd suggest picking up a copy from the office before you go!
East Lyme Harbor Management also meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the memorandum of agreement between East Lyme and Waterford for shared used of a 23-foot boat. Both meetings will be held at East Lyme Town Hall in Niantic.

4. Old Lyme Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a special public hearing at at 5 p.m. to discuss a special permit to allow for a in an industrial zone. It's a big project and an exciting one that promises to liven up the winter with an indoor ice rink, tennis and racketball courts, and a whole lot more!
5. There's been some confusion about exactly how long Town Woods Fields in Old Lyme will be closed to athletic activities while the fields are being revamped. As the fields are used by teams from both Old Lyme and Lyme, this came up at the most recent meeting as a cause for concern if the ban should extend into the school year. promises to clarify the issue at its meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Old Lyme Memorial Town Hall.
