Five things to know for Thursday, August 30, 2012.

1. Today promises to be sunny and hot with a high temperature of 83 degrees and not a rain cloud in sight! Weather.com predicts tonight will also be mostly clear with a low temperature of 65 degrees.
Be glad you don't live on the Gulf Coast. President Barack Obama has now declared Louisiana a disaster area following the drenching it got from Hurricane Isaac's heavy rains and high storm surge which overwhelmed levees and flooded homes.

2. How's this for a long strange trip? In August 2008, a rogue wave off the coast of Nantucket, Mass., swept Scott Douglas of Lyme off his 26-foot boat the Queen Bee. Douglas and his brother-in-law swam for shore. His boat, however, decided to take a little trip all by herself. Now, four years later, Douglas has finally been reunited with his Queen. The Associated Press reports she made it all the way to Spain, cushions intact!
3. The Lymes Senior Center is open again after being closed yesterday for electrical work, which necessitated turning off the power.

4. If you're looking for ideas to keep the kids entertained in those hours between the time they come home from school and the time you come home from work, East Lyme Youth Services has the answer.
It's offering a new after-school program from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the East Lyme Youth Center, where kids can play Wii, ping pong, basketball, air hockey, foosball, and enjoy movies, all under the watchful eye of the center's trained and caring youth staff. 5. The Old Lyme Board of Selectmen will hold a Special Meeting at Old Lyme Town Hall at 7:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to review the wastewater collection, treatment and dispersal alternatives analysis for Old Colony Beach Association, which will be presented by Lombardo Associates, Inc. Yup, it's sewers again!
