The Daily Five: The End of Jeffrey's Rainbow, Farewell Calhoun, and a Fresh Look at School Lunch
Five things to know for Friday, September 14, 2012

1. We're likely to see a few more clouds rolling in today and possibly a scattered thunderstorms this evening but, for the most part, Weather.com is predicted a pretty nice day with a high temperature of 78 degrees and an overnight low of 61 degrees. There's a 10 percent chance of rain during the day and a 30 percent chance of rain tonight.
2. It's not every day that news of a coach's retirement prompts a response from the governor but then, UConn Men's Basketball Coach Jim Calhoun wasn't just any coach.

“There are many things that make UConn a top university, including the basketball team that Coach Calhoun built into a national powerhouse, winning three national championships," said Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy yesterday. "His retirement marks the end of an era, and I wish him well in the next chapter of his life.”
Lt. Governor Wyman said, “To me, the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center and his annual bike ride against cancer are as much part of his legacy as his incredible achievements on the basketball court."

Ironically, it was a broken hip that Calhoun suffered after falling off his bike while riding around his hometown of Madison that influenced his decision to retire now.
3. Jeffrey's Rainbow Run, a family-friendly 5K event to benefit the Bourgeois family which tragically lost their young son Jeffrey this spring, was by all accounts a great success.
According to East Lyme Parks and Recreation Director David Putnam, more than 570 people turned out to participate last Friday, including all the schools' sports teams. Several hundred spectators also turned out to show their support. At the end of the day, the event raised a whopping $15,000!
If you want to know who came first, second, and third in each of the many age divisions, you'll find full results on the town of East Lyme's web site.
4. It's one thing for the f but getting kids to choose to eat the collard greens and carrots that are now on the menu is a different kettle of fish.
Chartwells Food Services, which operates the meal service at both the East Lyme and Lyme-Old Lyme school districts, is trying to encourage students to eat more fruits and vegetables with a new "create a meal" poster campaign.
The pictures show a variety of combinations that add up to a healthy meal and, surprise, Pizza + Milk is not one of them because there are no fruits and vegetables on that plate. (Remember when the government tried to convince us that Ketchup was a vegetable? What a difference a few decades makes!)
5. If you fancy shellfish for dinner, you'll be please to know that East Lyme is once again open for shellfishing. As of late yesterday afternoon, Area A in the Niantic River, Area E in the Niantic Bay, and the approved areas in East Lyme were given the all-clear by Ledge Light Health District.
