The Daily Five: An Indoor Athletic Complex, a Shorter Walk for Breast Cancer, and A Few of Peterson's Birds Fly Home

1. Today promises to be just as lovely as yesterday, with sunny skies and a high of 73 degrees. There's no chance of rain, according to Weather.com, and tonight should be clear and cool, with a low of 51 degrees. 

Luckily, the tornadoes forecasters warned us about on Saturday missed us completely but in case you missed it, here are a few images from the two twisters that hit New York City. Now that's not something you see every day! 

2. Do you think Old Lyme could use an indoor skating rink? How about indoor tennis courts or a swimming pool for year-round use? , which promises all that and more, will be the subject of a public hearing tonight when Old Lyme's Zoning Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. at Old Lyme Memorial Town Hall.

This will be the public's first opportunity to hear about the proposal, which has been developed by Old Lyme residents Kasie Munson and Patrick Pryor. The location they have in mind is currently zoned as a Light Industrial District. The purpose of tonight's public hearing is to weigh the merits of granting a special use permit for the proposed athletic complex.  

The Zoning Commission will also hear a request for a special permit and a Municipal Coastal Site Plan Review Application to construct a 14,600 square foot two-story professional office building at 1 Huntley Road in Old Lyme.  

3. The Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation's Walk Across Southeastern Connecticut is set for October 6. This 26.2 mile marathon from Old Saybrook to Waterford is not for the faint of heart or for the out of condition, but the organization does break it down into half and quarter marathons for people who want to participate but don't think they'll make it all the way.

This year, however, Anytime Fitness in Niantic is offering another option for those who are unable to walk on October 6. You can register as a walker at www.tbbcf.org and do the walk in stages at Anytime Fitness Niantic. Show Anytime Fitness your registration receipt and you'll receive a one month membership to complete your walk. Staff at Anytime Fitness will record your miles as you work toward your goal. It's a great option if you want to raise money for breast cancer research without walking your feet off in one day!

4. More than 550 works by famed artist, naturalist, and conservation crusader Roger Tory Peterson—including oil, watercolor, and goache paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs—were put up for auction in New York over the weekend. Peterson, who is perhaps best known for his Field Guides, was a resident of Old Lyme from 1952 until his death in 1996. 

A number of his works ended up fetching much higher prices than Guernsey's Auction House had anticipated, with some selling for as much as $10,000, the New London Day reported. A few local residents, some of whom knew Peterson personally, attended the auction and managed to bring home some of their favorite works by the artist, The Day noted.    

5. Finally, because the week wouldn't be complete unless someone was talking about sewers, there will be a special meeting of the Old Lyme Water Pollution Control Authority at Old Lyme Town Hall at 7 p.m. this evening.
