The Daily Five: Another Vote on the Samuel Smith House and Tickets to Ride at the Durham Fair

Five things to know for Thursday, September 27, 2012

1. Today will start with showers in the morning and end with rain tonight. According to Weather.com, the rest of the day is likely to be cloudy with a high temperature of 71 degrees and an overnight low of 54 degrees.

2. The proposed acquisition of the Samuel Smith House has been on just about every commission's agenda for months now but tonight it's being taken up by the East Lyme Board of Finance at a special meeting at 6 p.m. that will end with a yay or a nay vote.

The East Lyme Board of Selectmen have empowered First Selectman Paul Formica to exercise a 90-day option for the town to buy the historic house in order to preserve it as a museum. For the deal to go through, however, the Board of Finance must approve it.

If the purchase gets the green light by the Board of Finance, it will go back to the Board of Selectmen for a final vote. The ultimate decision will be made by voters at a Special Town Meeting in October.

3. The Durham Fair begins today and runs through the weekend. Here's everything you'll need to know before you go. If you'd like to go but don't want to pay for a ticket, the Durham Fair is still looking for volunteers—and volunteers get in for free!

Patch is also giving away two VIP tickets to see Kellie Pickler, who will be performing at the Durham Fair on Saturday. To win the tickets, go to the Durham Patch and share your favorite memory of the Durham Fair. The winner will be announced on Friday at 5 p.m.

4. Just a reminder you're likely to encounter traffic delays today as Old Lyme Public Works department begins roadwork on Johnnycake Hill Road. The roadwork is scheduled to continue through Monday, October 1, but that may change if the weather turns out to be as wet as it's forecast to be this weekend. The roads will be passable while the work is being done, but do be careful.

5. Throughout September, East Lyme town employees have been raising money for Caring Bridge. According to the town's web site, they chose this charity to kick off the fundraising program "in honor of a dear friend and coworker who is currently battling cancer."

So if you go to town hall on Friday, don't be surprised to see everyone wearing blue or maroon. Those are their coworker's favorite colors and it's all part of the fundraiser.

Caring Bridge provides a link to friends and family members who want to offer support and receive updates on loved ones as they head down the road to recovery. You can find out more about Caring Bridge here
