The Daily Five: Are You Ready to Rumble? It's Debate Time Again!
Five things to know for Thursday, October 11, 2012

1. No rain today! According to Weather.com, it's going to be sunny and breezy with a high of 60 degrees. This evening will be clear with an overnight low of 47 degrees.
2. There are not one but two debates tonight. The one most people will be watching will be the first face off between vice presidential candidates Republican Paul Ryan and Democrat Joe Biden and we’ll be giving everyone the chance to chime in, because Patch is hosting a live blogging session throughout the debate. So join the discussion, share your thoughts, and we’ll tweet them to the world!

3. The second is of big interest locally. That’s the Connecticut Senate debate between Democrat Chris Murphy and Republican Linda McMahon, which will be held at UConn tonight at 7 p.m. If the last one was anything to go by, this promises to be quite the smackdown, possibly even a cage match! We’ll be tracking that too, to see who swings the first chair!
4. And, just to get all the politicians out of the way first, last week Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced a comprehensive energy plan that he said would create thousands of jobs in Connecticut. This morning at the University of Hartford Construction Institute’s 18th annual State of the State event at The Hangar at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, he will specifically address how his recently unveiled energy strategy will create thousands of jobs in the construction industry while lowering energy costs for residents and businesses.

5. In more local news, Old Lyme Zoning Commission last night voted in favor of settling a protracted civil suit brought against it by Nicholas J. DiCorleto, Jr. regarding the property located at 42 Breen Avenue in Old Lyme, where DiCorleto has long sought to demolish an existing property and rebuild new. The Zoning Commission had denied permission based on the fact that the house proposed was not in accordance with size specifications set by the town. DiCorleto appealed and the Zoning Board of Appeals granted a waiver based on revised plans.
DiCorleto has agreed to drop the suit, with prejudice, but at no cost to the town. The attorney representing the Old Lyme Zoning Commission said that a continued legal battle would be prohibitively expensive. Not everyone voted in favor of approving a settlement, however. Zoning Commissioner Jane Marsh voted against it because she said she felt the Zoning Board of Appeals had exceeded its authority and that settling the case would encourage others who the Zoning Board ruled against to file suits. The settlement will have to be approved by the judge before it becomes official.
