The Daily Five: Earth-Shaking Events, Trivial Pursuits, Dancing for a Cure, and More Prescription Discounts

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme, Wednesday, October 17, 2012

1. Today will be book-ended by clouds but it should be dry and the sun should make an appearance midday. There's just a 10 percent chance of rain this evening, according to Weather.com. The high temperature will top out at about 61 degrees and drop to 48 degrees overnight.

2. A lot of people felt the earth move beneath their feet yesterday—and not in a good way! An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck close to Hollis Center, Maine, at 7:12 p.m. near the Maine/New Hampshire border but people felt it all over Connecticut.

Local Patch readers reported feeling it at Harbor Towers in New London, in Gales Ferry, and in Salem. Bob Davis commented that he felt it in Niantic and Kristen St. Germain posted on The Lymes Patch Facebook that her family felt it in Old Lyme.

"My son came running down the stairs claiming we had an earthquake. Of course...We didn't believe him. In Old Lyme...he felt it! Having just experienced the Virginia one last summer while vacationing at the Jersey Shore...he knew what it feels like."

As of last night, Connecticut's Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security had received no reports of any damage but there was whole lot of shakin' going on given the distance the tremors traveled!

3. Prescription discounts may be in the cards for East Lyme residents. Both Lyme and Old Lyme are offering the discount cards for town residents who don't have prescription coverage. If the East Lyme Board of Selectmen follow suit, residents of East Lyme and Niantic may have them soon too. The Selectmen will take up the issue for discussion at tonight's meeting at 7:30 at East Lyme Town Hall.

4. Move over, Dancing with the Stars competitors, L&M Hospital has stepped onto the dance floor! In case you haven't heard, L&M staff members and 16 breast cancer survivors are dancing for a cure. They've entered a dance video in the national Pink Glove Dance Competition, the winner of which will receive a $10,000 donation to the charity of their choice.

L&M has pledged to donate it all to the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation but to win, the team needs your help because the victor is determined by popular vote. If you haven't seen the video yet, you can find it posted with the Daily Five. It is absolutely fabulous! You can't vote for it on YouTube though. To vote, go to www.pinkglovedance.com

5. There's been a lot of buzz about the first soon-to-be-annual Trivia Bee which is being held at the Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School Auditorium on Nov. 2. More than 20 teams have already registered for the event, including one formed by Old Lyme First Selectwoman Bonnie Reemsnyder and Lyme First Selectman Ralph Eno.

If you've been thinking about entering, now's the time to pull the trigger. Entries are due today! You can find registration forms online at www.lolef.org.  If you're worried about how well you'll do, go incognito—a lot of teams will be wearing costumes!

All the money raised from the event will help support the Lyme-Old Lyme Education Foundation, which provides grants for teachers and students.
