Five things to know for Wednesday, August 14, 2012

 

1. Today's weather forecast is less than promising. Weather.com is predicting variable clouds with thunderstorms, particularly in late afternoon. The high temperature should be about 80 degrees and there's a 60 percent chance of rain. Overnight temperatures dip to about 68 degrees and there may be scattered thunderstorms this evening.

2. The big news, of course, is . could have been better but many of those who did vote . The bigger battle, however, is yet to come. Formica faces a formidable challenge going up against incumbent Democrat Joe Courtney in the election in November.

3. And now, in the immortal words of Monty Python, for something completely different! degrees that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the water used to cool essential plant components needs to be to ensure all systems will function in case of an emergency.

This couldn't have come at a worst time, however. Not only is this a peak time for energy usage and earnings for Dominion, it's also happening the same week Millstone is holding . The two issues aren't linked but with the public hearing scheduled for tonight, it's not a good time for potential safety issues to be in the news.

4. On a cheerier note, the tiny town of Lyme is gearing up for its biggest event of the year. The Hamburg Fair is happening August 17, 18, and 19. This annual country fair has been held for more than a century, so organizers have a pretty good handle on it but you'll find more information about all of that later this week on Patch. 

5. It's nearly time for kids to go back to school (whew!). New students—and there are plenty of them this year in East Lyme, Lyme and Old Lyme—should register for the East Lyme School District on August 16. Registration for students in the early grades in the Lyme-Old Lyme School District Region 18 is available by appointment beginning August 21; August 22 is the registration date for incoming Lyme-Old Lyme High School students.
