The Daily Five: Mosquitoes Bearing Viruses in Old Lyme, Golf for a Cause in East Lyme

Five things to know for Thursday, August 16, 2012

 

1. Today will be partly cloudy and hot with a high temperature of 84 degrees, according to Weather.com. There's only a 20 percent chance of rain during the day and tonight should be clear and cooler, with a low temperature of 65 degrees.

2. Old Lyme is the latest town to be added to the list of 40 so far in Connecticut where mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV). Additionally, the state Department of Health is reporting that the first mosquitoes testing positive for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) have been detected in Chester. In the meantime, if you have horses make sure they're up-to-date with their shots for EEE, WNV, and rabies. And if you're outside often, be sure to wear mosquito repellent. No human cases of WNV have been reported yet. Let's keep it that way, eh?

3. There will be road work crews out around Rogers Lake starting today. Old Lyme Public Works will be supervising chip sealing, which involves placing a layer of oil followed by a topping of stone on the following roads: Jericho, Ladyslipper, Craig; Rogers Lake Trail; Briar Hill; Lords Meadow, Squire Hill, Duchess Drive in Old Lyme.

The roads will be passable but the stone has to stay in place for seven to 10 days to prevent vehicles tracking oil from the road. If you're riding a bike, (and this is a popular area for that) be extra careful!

4. Just a reminder that the golf benefit for Glenn Landers, , tees off tomorrow at Cedar Ridge Golf Club in East Lyme at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. It's $75 to play but there are also unlimited opportunities to sponsor a hole for $75 if you want to make a donation. All proceeds will go to help pay Landers' medical bills.

5. New student registration begins today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at . New student registration for the begins at 9 a.m. August 21. In both districts, registration is by appointment only, so parents will need to call the schools in advance. 

Lyme-Old Lyme School District requires each that new student arrive with a birth certificate and that academic and health records be forwarded from the previous school. You'll find information about East Lyme's requirements for new students online.
