The Daily Five: Four More Years for Obama and Another Storm Heading Our Way

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme for Wednesday, November 7, 2012

1. Brace yourself, here comes the Nor'easter! Just as we're picking up the pieces after Hurricane Sandy, another storm is heading our way. The National Weather Center has issued a coastal flood watch for our area from 2 p.m. today until 7 a.m. tomorrow. The actual forecast doesn't sound so dire, however.

Weather.com is predicting a cloudy, windy day with showers that could bring about half an inch of rain. Winds could gust up to 40 mph during the day, 50 mph overnight, and temperatures will be cold, with a high of 43 degrees and an overnight low of 37 degrees. We've definitely been through worse, but better be prepared with flashlights just in case.

2. It's official, President Barack Obama has been reelected for four more years. As the majority of voters in Old Lyme, East Lyme, and Lyme voted for the president, many of you will be celebrating today. But whether you're pleased or disappointed by the election results, I'm guessing I'm not the only one sighing with relief that the election campaign is finally over! Whew!

3. Towns are trying to get back to business as usual today so here's an update on an event that was postponed by the storm and lost in the shuffle of the Presidential Election.

Old Lyme has rescheduled the Town Meeting originally set for October 29 to vote on approval of two new roads and to elect a new member to the Lyme-Old Lyme Board of Education to replace Judith Read, who is resigning. The town meeting will be held on November 14 at Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School at 7:30 p.m.

4. Last night, 10 unlucky CL&P customers in East Lyme were still without power but according to the latest CL&P outage map, power has now been restored to all homes in Old Lyme, East Lyme, and Lyme. In Old Lyme, however, a number of seasonal homes have been taken offline due to safety concerns. Power will not be restored to these homes until Old Lyme building inspectors have given the all clear.

5. Wondering what to do with debris from Hurricane Sandy? Old Lyme's transfer station will take it at no charge and has extended its hours from Monday to Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 17. Residents must register with the town to drop off debris for free, but town hall has also extended its hours and will be open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. this week and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. If you have questions, please call town hall at (860) 434-1605 Ext. 212.

Although Old Lyme won't do curbside pickup, East Lyme will be scooping up any brush, limbs, or tree trunks left by the side of the road until November 17. You can also drop off greenwaste at Veterans Field at Pennsylvania and Oswegatchie Road. The drop-off area will stay open from sunrise to sunset until December 1. The town of East Lyme won't pick up demolition material or household waste, however. Neither East Lyme nor Old Lyme will be accepting loose leaves.
