The Daily Five: Holes in The Roof, Police Blotter Update, and No Shellfish Today

Five things to know for Thursday, September 20, 2012

1. Today we'll see a mix of sun and clouds with Weather.com predicting a high temperature of 70 degrees and an overnight low of 51 degrees. There's just a 10 percent chance of rain during the day and a 20 percent chance of rain overnight.

2. East Lyme voters approved a special appropriation of $128,871 at last night's Special Town Meeting to pay to have holes made in the ceiling of Field Services Complex building at 8 Capitol Drive. Okay, so there's a bit more to it than that.

The town is installing a new energy efficient lighting system that uses sunport lights, essentially holes in the ceiling, to let sunlight in to illuminate the building. There will be a backup system of lights on motion sensors for use if need be but as most of the work in the warehouse takes place during the day, sunlight should suffice most of the time.

The town estimates the energy savings will amount to $12,000 a year. What's more, installing the new lighting system won't end up costing East Lyme much at all. Connecticut Light & Power is kicking in a $30,000 grant and the town expects to be reimbursed for the remainder of the balance through a Local Capital Improvement Fund grant from the state.

3. The report of suspicious incident at 60 Rogers Lake Trail in Old Lyme may not be quite as sinister as it sounds. Although the police report said the homeowner saw someone in the backyard and the "suspect fled" when she turned on the outside lights, Old Lyme Police Officer Martin Lane said that "something" might be a better word.

Lane said the homeowner called police after she observed something dark in the shadows of her back yard but it may or may not have been a person. Police are investigating, though, so if you noticed anything or anyone unusual in the neighborhood on September 13, give Lane a call at (860) 434-1986.

4. Heavy rains on Tuesday once again prompted Ledge Light Health District to order local shellfishing areas closed. Shellfish area A in the upper Niantic River, area B in the lower Niantic River, area E in the Niantic Bay, area F off McCooks and approved areas are closed until further notice.

5. It's back to school night at East Lyme Middle School this evening for Bay House and Sound House starting at 6 p.m. Did you know that East Lyme Middle School is Connecticut's Middle School of the Year?! There will be a special celebration marking that achievement on September 28.
