The Daily Five: Middle School of the Year Webcast, an Old Lyme Eagle Scout Soars, and Pro Tek Turns Pink!

Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Friday, September 28, 2012

1. You'll need an umbrella today! Weather.com is predicting steady rainfall from morning to night and although it will mostly be showers, it could amount to half an inch at the end of it all and there might be a few afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures won't reach much higher than 65 degrees and will drop to 57 degrees tonight.

2. East Lyme Middle School will be holding a special assembly today from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. to celebrate the fact that it's Connecticut's Middle School of the Year! A number of local dignitaries and politicians will be there as the school is awarded a display banner but for students, the big fun will be making their own sundaes for lunch!

Knowing that a number of parents who might have wanted to attend will be at work, the school will be live-streaming the event on its web site. To see it, click the following link http://www.eastlymeschools.org/page.cfm?p=3451 or log on the www.eastlymeschools.org, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on live stream. If you are unable to view it real time, the celebration will remain on the live streaming page for viewing at any time.

3. At 15, Zachary Harrison of Old Lyme is about to become one of the youngest Eagle Scouts ever! Harrison's Leadership Project involved clearing dead and fallen trees and brush from a quarter mile stretch of Keeny Road, which serves as the access road from Route 156 to Nehantic State Forest.

The project was months in the making and required cooperation from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The clearing itself involved all the members of Old Lyme-Lyme's Boy Scout Troop 26, Cub Scouts, and volunteers. Harrison will be honored at an Eagle Scout ceremony at the Community Center at White Sand Beach in Old Lyme at 6 p.m. this evening.

Congratulations, Zach!

4. Pro Tek Auto at 315 Main Street in Niantic is turning pink for the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation (TBBCF). On September 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Pro Tek is offering a free auto inspection and a gift certificate for a complimentary oil change to be used at a later date to anyone who makes a $25 donation to TBBCF.

It's going to be pretty hard to miss this event, as the entire place is decked out with pink lights, WCTY will be broadcasting live from the location from 10 a.m. to noon, the Sue Manhart Band will be performing from noon to 2 p.m. followed by That's What She Sang from 2 to 4 p.m. So stop by, find out more about the foundation and perhaps even register to join the Walk Across Southeastern Connecticut on October 6!

5. Craving shellfish? As of Thursday, the shellfishing areas in Niantic River and Niantic Bay were once again open for fishing but given the rain forecast for today, you shouldn't count on them being open for long. Typically, the shellfishing areas close if we get about an inch of rainfall. Weather.com is predicting we might get half an inch tomorrow, so make sure the areas are open before you plan to go clamming this weekend.
