The Daily Five: Millstone Holds Emergency Drill and a Bumper Car at the Fair

Five things to know about East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme for Tuesday, August 21, 2012

1. Today will be partly cloudy with a high of 81 degrees and an overnight low of 62 degrees. According to Weather.com, there's a 20 percent chance of rain.

2. Don't panic if you hear sirens or see emergency vehicles racing in the direction of today. East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme are all participating in an emergency drill at Millstone in Waterford. The towns and the plant held a practice drill last month to make sure they would all be on the same page for today's official drill, which will be conducted under the watchful eye of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

By the way, in the event of an actual emergency, we're advised to cover our mouths and noses with a wet cloth and head south to Southern Connecticut State University's field house in New Haven. Comforting, isn't it?

3. The went off without a hitch but it started with a bit of a bump when a car drove into a fairground fence. The accident happened at the corner of Sterling Road about 15 minutes after the fair opened on August 17. The driver, who hails from Lyme, told police a "hot flash" caused her to black out as she was traveling northbound on Route 156, at which point the car drifted off the righthand side of the road. There were no reported injuries and it seems the main damage was to the fence.

4. Most people don't enjoy meetings but Old Lyme Board of Selectmen have been tacking on a few more than usual recently.

On Friday, the Board held a special meeting to discuss a settlement in the lawsuit brought by Rudolph Netsch against the Town of Old Lyme over unresolved money issues stemming from construction work during the rennovation of Old Lyme Memorial Town Hall. There are a few "i"s to dot and "t"s to cross but the Board of Selectmen has approved a settlement amounting to $153,000, plus $2,700 in mediation fees.

Tonight, Old Lyme Board of Selectmen will hold another Special Meeting at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall, this time to review a draft of proposed town financial policies. The Finance Commission meeting will follow.

5. Other meetings tonight include the East Lyme Water and Sewer Commission and the Harbor Management and Shellfish Commission, both of which meet at East Lyme Town Hall at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively. In Lyme, the Recreation Commission meets tonight at Town Hall at 7 p.m.
