The Daily Five: Old Lyme Board of Education Election, School Schedules, Sandy Spares East Lyme Sewers.

1. Today will be sunny and clear, with a high temperature of 49 degrees and an overnight low of 33 degrees, according to Weather.com.

2. The Special Town Meeting originally scheduled for October 29 will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School auditorium. Voters in Old Lyme will be asked to consider accepting Village Lane, a part of Village Estates Subdivision, and , as town roads,. The Old Lyme Planning Commission has approved both, as recommended by the Board of Selectmen.

Eligible voters in Old Lyme will also vote on a successor to Judith Read, a Republican who has resigned from the Regional District 18 Board of Education. The two candidates running for this position are Democrat Diane Linderman and Republican Steve Spooner.

A presentation of the proposed improvements for Sound View Beach will be held immediately following the Special Town Meeting. 

3. East Lyme School District is still discussing how to make up the days lost to Hurricane Sandy and the power outages that followed. East Lyme Board of Education members discussed the issue at their meeting earlier this week. A previous suggestion that schools open the day before Thanksgiving was rejected.

Lyme-Old Lyme Schools have already made a decision to push back the final day of school, which was originally slated for June 13, 2013, to June 19. Teachers will have to come in on June 20, which is now scheduled as a professional development day.  

4. East Lyme dodged a bullet when Hurricane Sandy's storm surge didn't bring flooding to the extent that was predicted in areas that could have affected sewers. The Water and Sewer Commission got a quick snapshot of the storm's impact on the town's sewer system last night and for the most part, the news was good.

There was some damage to the Shore Road pump station but no flood water entered the sewer system, none of the chemical tanks flooded, and the water system is A-OK. 

The town of East Lyme is planning to repair the damage done to the Shore Road pump station, athough Water and Sewer Commissioner Joseph Mingo questioned the wisdom of that.

"You can only build in a flood zone once, then when it gets destroyed, it tells you something," he said.                                                      

5. East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica has tapped Town Engineer Bill Scheer to serve as Acting Director of Public Works following the sad loss of longtime director Michael Giannattasio two weeks ago. Formica said the appointment is temporary for now because he is planning to review and rearrange staffing in both the water and public works department.
