The Daily Five: Prescription Drugs in Old Lyme, Hadlyme's Post Office, and Vacancies in East Lyme
Five things to know for Monday, October 1, 2012

1. The lovely weather we could have used over the weekend arrives today. Weather.com is predicting a mostly sunny day with a high of 71 degrees, breezy with winds at 15 to 25 mph, and a clear night with an overnight low of 54 degrees.
2. The Old Lyme Board of Selectmen will likely vote tonight on whether the town will issue discount prescription cards for all town residents who are uninsured for who don't currently receive prescription benefits from their insurance. The cards are being made available through the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, of which the town is a member, and the program would be operated at no cost to the town.

3. There's a lot on the agenda at Old Lyme's Board of Selectmen meeting, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Old Lyme Memorial Town Hall. The new business includes a WPCA recommendation for Community Septic System, the formation of a Joint Committee on Playing Fields, Election Day preparations, a recap of the Sound View Improvements presentation recap, setting a timeline for the fiscal year 2012 budget, a new standpipe agreement, and the paving on Johnny Cake Hill Road and Meetinghouse Lane.
Don't forget, road work on Route 1 from East Lyme to Old Lyme is continuing through Oct. 4 of this week as the Department of Transportation tackles repaving. Drive safely!

4. The United States Post Office is conducting a review of operations at the Hadlyme Post Office as part of a nationwide evaluation of certain postal facilities. At the most recent Board of Selectmen meeting, Lyme Selectman Parker Lord said this will probably result in a reduction of window service to six hours a day on weekdays, but closure does not appear to be eminent.
5. During election season, high profile politicians are always in the camera eye as they run for the glamorous offices that endow them with power as senators and representatives, president and vice president.
On a local level, however, the people who serve on committees that make up our towns' governing system are all volunteers who put in an extraordinary amount of time and effort to meet, discuss, and decide issues that arguably have a far greater effect on our lives.
These are the unsung heroes of local politics, and East Lyme is looking for a few more good people to step up and volunteer to help keep the town growing.
East Lyme Economic Development Commission is looking to fill three or possibly four regular member vacancies. If you're interested, please contact the First Selectmen's Office at (860) 739-6931 x110 or email the First Selectmen's Executive Secretary at dstevens@eltownhall.com.
