Five things to know for Friday, August 24, 2012

 

1. Tropical Storm Isaac is heading toward Florida but here the weather promises to be nice yet again. Today's forecast high is 84 degrees with an overnight low of 64 degrees. Weather.com predicts just a 20 percent chance of rain during the day, which will be partly cloudy, and a 10 percent chance of rain overnight. 

2. Now the temperature seems to be dropping, Dominion is rolling the dice and betting that the water temperatures are going to stay below 75 degrees. in Waterford should be back in action again today.

3. Trying to get to East Lyme School District's Central Office, Flanders School and the High School Pool from Route 1 has been a bit like asking directions in Maine. With all driveways blocked off by construction, the answer has been "you can't get thar from here." That's going to change before school starts.

"Despite the construction that is going on and will be going on through the end of October, the Flanders School parking lot and access to the municipal pool and central office will be available on Tuesday when we start school," said School Superintendent Dr. James Lombardo.

The parking lot should be completed by today and the lines will be painted in time for the arrival of school buses and parents when .   

4. Tomorrow, East Lyme High School will be holding try-outs for a variety of team sports, including soccer and cross country (boys and girls), swimming, and girls' volleyball. Students will need a signed permission slip from parents and the school nurse will be available for meetings.

5. Household hazardous waste collections will be accepted tomorrow at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 5 Dump Road in Essex (exit 4 off Route 9) from the towns of Old Lyme and Lyme between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
