The Daily Five: School Experiment Ready for Lift-Off, Flu Shots, Walking for Cancer, and a Wee Faerie Village

Five things to know for Friday, October 5, 2012

 

1. Weather.com is predicting a partly cloudy day but there's just a 10 percent chance of rain and tonight should be clear. The high temperature should reach 76 degrees with an overnight low of 60 degrees.

2. It's not quite flu season yet, which makes it the perfect time to get a flu shot! The Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Connecticut is offering a flu clinic today at the Senior Center on Society Road from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again on October 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. To speed the process, please wear a short-sleeved shirt, bring your insurance card and $14.

On Saturday, the Old Lyme Visiting Nurses Association will offer a flu clinic at the Lymes' Senior Center, 26 Town Woods Road, in Old Lyme on October 6 from 9 a.m. to noon, free of charge for residents ages 50 and up or 18 and under who have chronic medical conditions. 

3. More than 30 artists spent this week transforming the grounds and gardens of the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme into a magical fairy land. Today, visitors will have their first opportunity to tour the Wee Faerie Village in the Land of Picture Making.

There are fairy houses, tiny tea sets, and all manner of wee fairy works of art to delight visitors of all ages. The event runs through November 5 and there are tons of activities from arts and crafts to story-telling and book events planned around it.  

4. Lots of people will be going for a very long walk on Saturday. The Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation's 7th annual Walk Across Southeastern Connecticut is being held on October 6, starting at 7 a.m. in Old Saybrook, through Old Lyme and East Lyme and ending in Waterford.

Half marathon walkers start out at Capital Drive in East Lyme at 10:30 a.m. and quarter marathon walkers start at the Niantic Baptist Church, Niantic at 1:00 p.m. All walks end at Camp Harkness, Waterford, with closing ceremonies at 3:30 p.m.

5. It's now t-minus two days and counting to East Lyme Middle School's great space adventure! Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) spacecraft Dragon is scheduled to launch at 8:34 p.m. from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Sunday.

The ship will be carrying an experiment designed by four East Lyme Middle School students to be conducted by scientists aboard the International Space Station.
