The Daily Five: Taxing Topics and Voter Registration

Five things you need to know for Tuesday, July 31, 2012

The Daily Five is Patch's regular morning column that tells you five things you need to know, all before breakfast!

1. Yesterday was mostly sunny but Weather.com is predicting mostly cloudy skies today, with a high temperature of 75 percent and an overnight low of 64 degrees. There's just a 10 percent chance of rain, though that will increase to a 20 percent chance for rain overnight.

2. Taxes are coming due, so if you haven't paid the property taxes for your car or your home, better get on down to Town Hall and do it pronto. You'll be paying extra if you don't do it by August 1.

3. Taxes are always a hot topic (not to mention a sore spot) during election season so it seems rather ironic that the due date for taxes is coinciding with a state-mandated special voter registration session today.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said that, since January 1 of this year, 45,191 new voters have registered to vote in Connecticut. Young voters are the largest group of new voters to register so far, with 18,952 voters between the ages of 18-29 registering in the last seven months, Merrill reports. Voters who are currently 17 years old but who will be 18 by Election Day may also register.

Please note, if you want to vote in the upcoming Republican and Democratic primaries on August 14, you have to register as an affiliated voter. Registrars will also hear requests to remove or add names from the registry.

4. The Old Lyme Board of Selectmen will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. to discuss litigation involving a civil suit filed against the town in U.S. District Court. The case, Anderson v. the Town of Old Lyme, was brought in protest of Planning and Zoning regulations that required registration of seasonal dwellings. Those regulations have been changed and the registration is no longer required but the suit is still pending.
