The Daily Five: The Art of Giving and the Gift of Art
Five things to know for East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme on Friday, November 23, 2012

1. Today will be partly cloudy (although I prefer to think that it will be mostly sunny!) with a high temperature of 54 degrees and an overnight low of 40 degrees, according to Weather.com. There's a 10 percent chance of rain during the day, but a 40 percent chance of rain tonight.
2. The Thanksgiving Day football game between Waterford and East Lyme High Schools was close, but no cigar. The final score was 29-24 to Waterford. Perhaps the Vikings will have more luck when they play on home turf!

3. Schools are closed today and so are East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme Town Halls but public libraries in Old Lyme, Lyme, and East Lyme will be open as usual and all U.S. federal offices, including the Post Office, and Connecticut state offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles are open for business again today.
4. Yesterday, 2,310 local families were able to sit down to a traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner thanks to Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center but it wouldn't have happened without an $8,000 donation from Dominion Resources. As of last week, the food bank was worried that it wouldn't have enough food to meet the growing demand this holiday season. Dominion stepped in at the last minute with a hefty donation just in time for dinner.

5. Can't stomach the thought of shopping on Black Friday? You can skip the lines at those big box stores and buy something truely lovely and unique in Lyme this evening.
The 11th Annual Thanksgiving Weekend Holiday Art & Fine Crafts Show at Hadlyme Public Hall, 1 Day Hill Road, in Lyme opens tonight with an artists' reception from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The show and sale includes fine arts and crafts from 30 local artists and artisans. This year's featured artist is photographer Adrien Broom, a Lyme native described by W Magazine as “an up-and-coming artist to look out for.”
There will be a $5 charge for tonight's event, which includes refreshments and music but admission is free Saturday Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A portion of the proceeds of all sales will go toward the Hadlyme Public Hall's restoration fund and to help with the maintenance of this historic building.
