The Daily Five: The Last Debate, The Common Loon, and East Lyme's Homecoming Crush

Five things to know for Monday, Oct. 22, 2012

1. It promises to be another lovely day today, with a high of 65 degrees and an overnight low of 47 degrees. According to Weather.com, it should be sunny all day, mostly clear tonight, and there's no chance of rain.

2. The third and final Presidential Debate between President Barack Obama and Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney will be held tonight. As we have with the two previous debates, Patch will be hosting a Live Blog throughout. Join us, won't you?

3. In case you missed it, East Lyme High School played its homecoming game against Ledyard on Friday night. As the East Lyme High playing field is still under construction, the game was played at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Having the opportunity to play on such a great field was terrific, the game not so much. Ledyard crushed East Lyme 48-7.

"It wasn't pretty," said East Lyme High School Principal Michael Susi. "We had great weather. I just wish the score had been a little different."

The good news is Susi is very optimistic that the East Lyme High School Athletic Complex will be completed in time for the Thanksgiving game. Perhaps being on new home turf will put a bit more spring in everyone's step.

4. The Common Loon, a new restaurant slated to open later this week in the space previously occupied by Frank's Gourmet Grill at 135 Boston Post Road in East Lyme, held an open house on Saturday to people the chance to taste test a few of the items that will be on the menu.

The restaurant will have a "soft opening" sometime midweek. Restaurant owners say they plan to open for business officially this weekend, possibly on Friday. Call (860) 739-5666 or check on the Common Loon's Facebook page to find out more details.

5. Traffic Alert: Drivers are being asked to find alternate routes around Upper Walnut Hill Road, Holmes Road, and Grassy Hill Road in East Lyme this week as the roads are being repaved. The roadwork, which began on Friday Oct. 19, will continue until November 2, during which time the roads will be open to local traffic only.
