The Daily Five: There's Really No Predicting The First Nor'Easter and Voters in East Lyme

1. This morning's commute is likely to be messy if you're heading along the shoreline. , brought freezing rain, high winds, cold temperatures, and snow yesterday.

Today, we can expect more wind and rain, giving way to showers as the day wears on. Expect wind gusts up to 35 mph and a high temperature of just 43 degrees with overnight lows of 33 degrees. Rain should ease off as the day progresses, according to weather.com, although there may be some strong wind gusts of up to 40 mph. 

2. A coastal flood advisory remains in effect today until 7 a.m., as storm surges of 2 to 4 feet were expected overnight. That's not nearly has high as the storm surges of Hurricane Sandy but given the beach erosion and damage to beach homes done by that storm, coastal communities don't need another hit right now.

3. Just when the lights came on after Hurricane Sandy,  , blew them out again. As of 11 p.m. last night, 496 CL&P customers were without power in East Lyme, as were 3 customers in Old Lyme and 9 in Lyme. Here's hoping everyone still had their bottles of water, flashlights, and candles handy since Sandy. 

4. While many towns are still trying to figure out how to handle debris from Hurricane Sandy, Old Lyme is taking a more forward-thinking stance. The Old Lyme Board of Selectmen has officially proclaimed November 15th "America Recycles Day."

Municipalities produce 240 million tons of solid waste each year. That's 4 pounds per person every day. Of that, just 34.1 percent is recycled. Old Lyme hopes to change that by encouraging more people to reuse and recycle waste that ordinarily ends up in landfills. 

5. Wondering how it came to be that East Lyme's First Selectman Paul Formica didn't win Tuesday's Election in his own home town? As it turns out, East Lyme is a tough place to call. Townwide, there are 3,680 registered Democrats, 2,793 registered Republicans, and a whopping 5,692 unaffiliated voters, plus 30 "others". So of the town's 12,195 registered voters, about half can swing either way on election day.
