The Daily Five: Traffic Delays, Help Wanted, and How to Become a Soccer Mom

Five things to know in East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme for Wednesday, September 12, 2012

1. Expect another beautiful day today. Weather.com predicts it's going to be sunny and clear with a high temperature of 78 degrees and an overnight low of 60 degrees. Clear skies and a crescent moon will make it a lovely night for stargazing too!

2. Roadwork is going to make the going slow along Route 1 starting today. Connecticut Department of Transportation is repaving Boston Post Road from Flanders Four Corners in East Lyme all the way to Boughton Road in Old Lyme. The bad news is that the road work isn't scheduled to end until October 4. The good news is the road should be a lot better when it's done!

3. If you're in the market for a job, it's probably worth a drive to Danbury to attend the Connecticut Department of Labor's job fair today. Just because the event is being held in Danbury doesn't mean that's were the all jobs are. More than 50 companies will participate including BMW of Ridgefield, Cable Vision, FedEx, New York Life, United Technologies Aerospace Systems, and Banker’s Life and Casualty.

The event will be held at the Ethan Allen Hotel, 21 Lake Avenue Extension, in Danbury from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free. So press that business suit, dust off that resume, and prepare to wow potential employers with a confident smile and a firm handshake!

4. Flanders Elementary School in East Lyme will be hosting a "Back to School Night" (for parents only) this evening. Parents of children in Grades 1-2 are invited from 6 to 6:50 p.m. and parents of children in Grades 3-4 are invited from 7 to 7:50 p.m. Please note, there will be no PTA meeting tonight.

5. If you're a soccer fan then you know fall means football! And if you're a soccer mom (or want to be), now's the time to register kids for the Old Lyme/Lyme fall youth soccer league.

The league is open to children from pre-K to grade five. Players will be grouped in co-ed teams according to age and ability. Games will be played at Town Woods Field on Saturday mornings and are tentatively scheduled to begin September 22 and run through November 10.

The fee is $40 per child or $60 per family, but each child must be registered individually. The deadline to register is September 14. Lyme parents should register with Lyme Parks and Recreation. You'll find a registration form here but if you've got questions, call Jason and Kristen Thornton at (860) 884-5057 or kristenthornton@aol.com.

The league could also use a little help, so if you'd like to volunteer step up—and show kids how to do the step-over!
