Distracted, Drunken Driving Cited In Vernon Fourth Of July Crash

VERNON, CT — Drunken and distracted driving were both blamed for a Fourth of July accident in Vernon, police said.

According to an arrest report, at 8:59 p.m. on Friday, police were dispatched to the area of Welles Road and Hartford Turnpike in Vernon after a car slammed into a utility pole. The driver refused medical transport, but, as police questioned him, they noticed the odor of alcohol on him, according to an incident report.

The 24-year-old from Windsor subsequently failed sobriety tests and was arrested for driving under the influence and failing to maintain the proper lane, according to an arrest report.

He was also charged with driving while using a hand-held electronic device.

The driver is due in Rockville Superior Court on July 14, records show.
