North Central Conservation District (NCCD) of Vernon is announcing the proposed planning and establishment of a community Edible Riparian Buffer which will be located at Tolland County Agriculture Center on 24 Hyde Ave. in Vernon. The NCCD is seeking individuals and organizations who are interested in participation in the planning and implementation of this 45’X60’ food forest that borders a section of Gage’s Brook.
A riparian buffer is a planting of vegetation, both woody and herbaceous, along the bank of a waterbody. This vegetative cover provides food and shelter for wildlife, helps mitigate flooding, cools streams for aquatic species, and filters pollutants and nutrients, preventing them from entering the water. The edible part of the project includes the planting of fruit and nut trees, berry shrubs, mushrooms and other edible vegetation, as well as medicinal herbs and plant material for crafts and woodworking. These plantings will make up much of the buffer. Harvest trails will meander through the buffer and will be ADA accessible.
This project is funded by the CT DEEP NPS Grant Program which supports clean water projects in Connecticut. If you are interested in getting involved or have questions, please contact the District at 860-875-3881.
