Valley Falls Beach Closed Due To High Bacteria Levels

VERNON, CT — The Vernon Parks and Recreation Department announced Friday that Valley Falls Beach is closed until further notice due to elevated bacteria levels in the water.

The high level of bacteria is a direct result of the recent heavy rains, town officials said. Signs have been posted warning people to stay out of the water.

Children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are the most likely populations to develop illnesses or infections after coming into contact with polluted water, usually while swimming, according to the U.S. Environment Protection Agency.

Meanwhile, Newhoca's beach at 185 Grier Road will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday instead.
