The 11/12 Vernon softball team lost to Middletown Saturday evening 13-3 in four innings to drop to 1 -2 in Section 2 pool play.
The team got off to a rough start by allowing 10 runs in the first inning.
The team settled down and played to a 3-3 tie after that.
Vernon left a number of runners on base, and failed to score with the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings, and with a runner on second in the first.
Tiffany Cosgrove had a long double to left in the third inning. Lauren Honan, Monica Bolduk and Cosgrove scored Vernon's runs. In addition to its strong offense, Middletown was solid in the field.
Defensively, Shannon Skivington made an excellent throw from center field to Morgan Bolduk at the plate to nail a Middletown runner in the fourth inning.
Vernon is hoping to bounce back on Monday against District 11 representative, Columbia SFC.
