VERNON, CT — The emergence and rising popularity of e-bikes has caused a bit of confusion when it comes to usage on the Vernon Rails-to-Trails system, police said this week.
"Recently, we’ve received some questions and concerns about the use of e-bikes on the Rails-to-Trails here in town," police said.
Police offered an explanation — Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are prohibited from all bicycle and multi-use trails in Vernon.

Class 1
- The motor engages when a rider is pedaling
- Assistance cuts off once the bike reaches 20 mph
- No throttle is allowed
- Designed for a more traditional biking experience
Class 2
- Has both a throttle and pedal-assist function
- Assistance from both the throttle and pedal-assist function cuts off at 20 mph
- Similar to a scooter
Class 3
- Pedal-assist only
- Assistance cuts off at 28 mph.
- Must have a speedometer
