Obituary: Klara A. Ohmes, 92, of North Haven

Klara, a founding member of the St. Frances Cabrini Parish in North Haven, was active in the Women's Club and served on the parish council.

NORTH HAVEN, CT - (From Wallingford Funeral Home) Klara A. Ohmes, 92, of North Haven, passed away peacefully March 8, 2021 at MidState Medical Center.

Miss Ohmes was born in New Haven on July 30, 1928, a daughter of the late Hermann A. and Barbara (Konrad) Ohmes and was a life-long North Haven resident.

She was employed as a bookkeeper for many years at the Neal Oil Company in Wallingford, retiring from the Goodrich Oil Company in New Haven.

A founding member of St. Frances Cabrini Parish in North Haven, Klara was active in the Women’s Club and served on the parish council.

An accomplished knitter and crocheter, a favorite pastime was participating in the parish prayer shawl ministry. At last count, Klara had crafted and donated more than 100 shawls.

Klara was a loyal member of the North Haven Grange # 35 and held many offices and served on many committees over 70 years of being a dedicated Granger.

In earlier years, Miss Ohmes enjoyed traveling, and had visited a number of National Parks and other points of interest in the United States. A highlight of her travels was a trip to Austria and Germany in 1980, where she was able to attend the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Klara’s most favorite vacation spot was Pemaquid Point in Maine.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Perendi Wright (Philip) and Margaret Ohmes, and a special godson, Ryan Timothy Shabbott. Klara is survived by her sisters, Rita Masanotti (John) and Theresa Baksa (Steven); nieces and nephews, Kathleen Kirschmann, Wallingford Probate Judge Philip A. Wright Jr., Timothy Wright, who was her constant support and caregiver, Mary Ellen Wettemann, Margaret Ann Shabbott, Susan Brosnan, Steven Baksa, John Masanotti, Thomas Masanotti, Michael Masanotti; and her cousin, Roy Ohmes. Klara is also remembered lovingly by several generations of grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at Center Cemetery in North Haven. There are no calling hours. Face masks are required to be worn and Covid-19 precautions and social distancing needs to be observed.

Arrangements are under the direction of The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford.
