Obituary: Thomas A. Laydon Jr., 93, of Wallingford

Thomas served as a Vice President of People's Bank for many years and was heavily active with various nonprofit organizations locally.

WALLINGFORD, CT - (From Wallingford Funeral Home) Thomas A. Laydon Jr., 93, of Ashlar Village, Wallingford, died peacefully on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at Masonicare Health Center. He was the beloved husband of Lorraine (Wendt) Laydon.

Thomas was born in New Haven, November 17, 1928, a son of the late Thomas A. Laydon Sr. and Ethel (Tilton) Laydon. He was a Vice President of People’s Bank where he worked with federal, state and local governments providing finance and development for low to moderate income housing.

Upon his retirement he volunteered for the Archdiocese of Hartford as a consultant in the Office of Urban Affairs. He was active with various nonprofit organizations including Farnham Neighborhood House, Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, and Neighborhood Housing Services.

He was active for over 50 years as a lector at many churches, most recently at Our Lady of Fatima. He volunteered at Ashlar Village where he worked as the Saturday grocer and the Wednesday evening receptionist.

Known to be a quiet man, Thomas was a loving, devoted family man and a man of great faith. He loved to sail, golf and to party! One of his greatest passions was researching his family’s genealogy. His quiet, subtle Irish wit will be greatly missed by all who love him.

In addition to his wife Lorraine, he is survived by his children, Joanne Callahan, Susan Gallagher, Elizabeth (Maloney) Laydon, Thomas Laydon III and Margaret Mary Laydon; his grandchildren, Patrick Callahan (Laura), Caitlan LeCardo (John), Meghan Callahan, Geoffrey Farina (Priscila), Gregory Farina, Kathleen Maloney (Nicholas Taylor), James Maloney (Victoria), Matthew Laydon, Thomas Laydon, Michael Laydon and Kelly Laydon; and seven great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Sbabo; and his son-in-law Daniel Callahan.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St. (in the Yalesville section of Wallingford), Monday (TODAY) from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 am from the funeral home when the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am.

Interment in All Saints Cemetery will be private. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, P.O. Box 1478, New Haven, CT 06506-1478.
